Worked example: ground beef

A 1 lb pack of ground beef costs $5.49 and a 2.25 lb pack costs $11.49. Per pound: $5.49 ÷ 1 = $5.49/lb, and $11.49 ÷ 2.25 ≈ $5.11/lb. The larger pack is about 7% cheaper per pound.

Now say the larger pack were labeled 36 oz instead. Enter 36 oz — the calculator converts it to 2.25 lb and gives the same answer.

Worked example 2: a price per kilogram

An imported pack of ground beef is labeled $11.00 per kg; the local pack is $4.79 per lb. Convert: $11.00 ÷ 2.2046 ≈ $4.99 per lb, so the local pack is about 4% cheaper. In the calculator, enter 1 kg and 1 lb with their prices and tap “per lb” — it converts for you.

When price per pound is the right unit

Use price per pound for heavier food sold by weight: meat, poultry, fish, deli cheese, fruit and vegetables, bulk bins, flour, rice, pet food and big coffee bags. Prices land in an easy range — a few dollars — and scales and meat labels usually show them already. For small packages, price per ounce is easier to read.

How to calculate price per pound

Price per pound = price ÷ weight in pounds. If the weight is in ounces, divide the ounces by 16 first (24 oz = 1.5 lb), or work out the price per ounce and multiply it by 16.

Meat, cheese and produce

Meat, deli items and loose produce are often sold by weight, with the total price printed on a sticker. Enter the total price and the weight from the same label. For a bag of apples or potatoes, use the net weight printed on the bag.

Bone-in cuts, marinades and added liquid change how much you actually eat. Bone-in chicken may be cheaper per pound on the label and still cost more per pound of meat. The calculator compares what the labels say — it can’t see the bones. For meat specifically, try the meat price per pound calculator.

Per pound vs. per kilogram

A kilogram is about 2.2 pounds. If you shop where labels use kilograms, tap “per kg” above the bars to see both products in that unit. The winner and the percentage never change when you switch units — only the number shown does.

Pounds and ounces on one label

Some packages list both, such as “Net Wt 1 lb 4 oz (567 g)”. Convert to one unit before you enter it: 1 lb 4 oz is 20 oz, or 1.25 lb. Either works — choose oz and type 20, or choose lb and type 1.25. The grams in brackets work too.

Deli counters and loose produce

At a scale or deli counter, the price per pound is usually posted before anything is weighed. That number already is the unit price, so you can enter it with a size of 1 lb and compare it with a pre-packed alternative from the shelf.
