Price Per Kg Calculator
Enter the price and weight of two products to see the real price per kilogram and which is the better buy.
Any currency works — just use the same one for both products.
Enter two products to compare
Worked example: pasta
A 500 g pack of pasta costs 1.29 and a 1 kg pack costs 2.39 (any currency works). Per kilogram: 1.29 ÷ 0.5 = 2.58 per kg, and 2.39 ÷ 1 = 2.39 per kg.
The 1 kg pack is about 7% cheaper per kilo. The calculator opens with grams on the first product and kilograms on the second, so you can type these numbers straight in.
Worked example 2: a US bag in pounds
A 2 lb bag of rice costs $3.99, and a 1 kg bag of similar rice costs $4.49. 2 lb is about 0.907 kg, so the US bag costs $3.99 ÷ 0.907 ≈ $4.40 per kg — about 2% cheaper than the 1 kg bag. That is close enough that a coupon or a sale would decide it.
When price per kg is the right unit
Price per kilogram is the standard unit in most metric countries for anything sold by weight: meat, cheese, fruit, vegetables, flour, pasta, rice and coffee. Use price per 100 g instead for small, pricey items such as spices, chocolate or tea, where per-kg numbers look huge.
| Grams | Kilograms | Pounds |
|---|---|---|
| 100 g | 0.1 kg | 0.22 lb |
| 250 g | 0.25 kg | 0.55 lb |
| 500 g | 0.5 kg | 1.10 lb |
| 750 g | 0.75 kg | 1.65 lb |
| 1,000 g | 1 kg | 2.20 lb |
| 2,500 g | 2.5 kg | 5.51 lb |
How to calculate price per kg
Price per kg = price ÷ weight in kilograms. For grams, divide by 1,000 first: 750 g is 0.75 kg. So 3.60 for 750 g is 3.60 ÷ 0.75 = 4.80 per kg.
Why the price per kilo matters
Package sizes are chosen by the manufacturer and are rarely round: 380 g, 450 g, 0.9 kg. Comparing shelf prices across those sizes tells you very little. The price per kilogram puts every pack on the same scale.
Shelf labels often show a unit price per kg or per 100 g, but neighboring products don’t always use the same reference unit, and promotional prices may not be included. A quick check with your own numbers settles it.
Kilograms, pounds and ounces
Imported goods are sometimes labeled in ounces or pounds. Pick the unit printed on each pack — the calculator converts everything and shows the result per kg, per 100 g, per lb or per oz. For small, pricey items the price per 100 g calculator is often easier to read.
Using it on your phone in the store
The calculator opens with grams on the first product and kilograms on the second, and shows the result per kilo. Type the price and weight from each label; the result appears as soon as both are filled in. If your shop’s labels use 100 g, tap “per 100 g” — the cheaper product and the percentage never change, only the number shown.
Multipacks and drained weight
For multipacks such as 4 × 125 g yogurts, tap + Multipack and enter 4 and 125 g. Canned food may list both a net weight and a drained weight; compare the same figure on both cans — usually the drained weight is what you actually eat.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert grams to kilograms?
Divide by 1,000. 250 g is 0.25 kg, so a 250 g pack for 2.00 costs 8.00 per kg.
What is the difference between price per kg and price per 100 g?
Only the scale. Price per 100 g is the price per kg divided by 10. Use whichever your store’s shelf labels show.
Does it work with any currency?
Yes. Both prices just need to be in the same currency; the cheaper product and the percentage are the same in any currency.
