Worked example: olive oil

A 500 mL bottle of olive oil costs 4.99 and a 1 L bottle costs 8.49. Per liter: 4.99 ÷ 0.5 = 9.98, and 8.49 ÷ 1 = 8.49.

The 1 L bottle is about 15% cheaper per liter.

Worked example 2: US jugs and metric cartons

A 64 fl oz jug of juice costs $3.99; a 1.75 L carton costs $3.49. 64 fl oz is about 1.89 L, so the jug costs $3.99 ÷ 1.89 ≈ $2.11 per liter and the carton $3.49 ÷ 1.75 ≈ $1.99 per liter — about 5% cheaper. Pick fl oz for the jug and L for the carton; the calculator does the conversion.

When price per liter is the right unit

Use price per liter for drinks, milk, oil, vinegar, juice and liquid household products in metric countries. For small bottles — sauces, syrups, shampoo, cosmetics — price per 100 mL is easier to read. In the US, price per fluid ounce or per gallon is more common; all of them pick the same winner.

How to calculate price per liter

Price per liter = price ÷ volume in liters. Convert milliliters by dividing by 1,000: 750 mL is 0.75 L. A 750 mL bottle for 3.00 costs 3.00 ÷ 0.75 = 4.00 per liter.

Multipacks of cans and small bottles

Drinks are often sold as 6 × 330 mL or 4 × 250 mL. Tap + Multipack, enter the number of items and the size of one, and the calculator uses the total: 6 × 330 mL = 1,980 mL. Compare that with a single 2 L bottle directly — the 6-pack vs 2-liter calculator is a ready-made setup.

Liters vs. US fluid ounces

One liter is about 33.8 US fluid ounces. If one product is labeled in fl oz, choose fl oz for it; the calculator converts and can show the result per L, per 100 mL, per gallon or per fl oz.

Watch the concentrates

Concentrated products — cordial, dish soap, laundry liquid — are diluted before use, so the price per liter of what is in the bottle isn’t the whole story. For detergent, compare the cost per load instead.

Using it in the store

The calculator opens with milliliters on the first product and liters on the second, and shows the result per liter. Enter each price and size exactly as printed. For per 100 mL — common on small bottles of sauces, syrups or cosmetics — tap the chip above the bars. Up to four bottles can be compared at once with + Add product.

Bottle deposits

Where bottles or cans carry a deposit, leave it out of the price so you compare the drink, not the container — you get the deposit back when you return it. Include it only if you won’t be returning the bottle.
