Worked example

A 6-pack of 12 fl oz cans costs $4.49 and a 2-liter bottle costs $2.29. The 6-pack holds 6 × 12 = 72 fl oz; 2 liters is about 67.6 fl oz.

Per fluid ounce: $4.49 ÷ 72 ≈ $0.062 and $2.29 ÷ 67.6 ≈ $0.034. The 2-liter bottle is about 46% cheaper per fluid ounce.

Why the answer isn’t obvious

72 fl oz and 67.6 fl oz look close, so it is easy to assume the cheaper package wins. But multipacks, sale prices and different can sizes (7.5 oz minis, 16.9 oz bottles) change the math. The multipack field does the multiplication for you.

Changing the setup

For a 12-pack, change the × count to 12. For 8 × 16.9 fl oz bottles, enter 16.9 as the size and 8 as the count. For a 1-liter or 3-liter bottle, change the size of the second product. US and metric units mix freely — tap “per L” above the bars to see the price per liter instead.

Convenience has a price

Cans stay fizzy until opened and are easy to carry; a 2-liter bottle loses carbonation once it is open. If half the bottle goes flat, your real cost per glass doubles. Use the price per fluid ounce as the starting point, then decide what fits how you drink.

Minis, bottles and 24-packs

The same approach works for 8 × 7.5 fl oz mini cans, 6 × 16.9 fl oz bottles or a 24-pack. Enter the size of one container and the count. Mini cans are handy for portion size but often cost more per ounce — check with your own prices.

Deposits

Where cans and bottles carry a deposit, leave it out of the price if you return the containers, so you compare the drink rather than the packaging.
