Price Per Fluid Ounce Calculator
Compare two liquids by their cost per fluid ounce, even when one is sold in gallons or liters.
Any currency works — just use the same one for both products.
Enter two products to compare
Worked example: milk
A half gallon of milk costs $2.79 and a gallon costs $4.29. A half gallon is 64 fl oz and a gallon is 128 fl oz. Per fluid ounce: $2.79 ÷ 64 ≈ $0.044 and $4.29 ÷ 128 ≈ $0.034.
The gallon is about 23% cheaper per fluid ounce. In the calculator you can enter the half gallon as 0.5 gal or as 64 fl oz — the result is the same.
Worked example 2: a 1-liter bottle
A 1-liter bottle of olive oil costs $8.99; a 32 fl oz bottle costs $8.29. One liter is about 33.81 fl oz, so the liter bottle costs $8.99 ÷ 33.81 ≈ $0.266 per fl oz and the 32 fl oz bottle $8.29 ÷ 32 ≈ $0.259 — about 3% cheaper. Pick L for one product and fl oz for the other; the calculator converts.
When price per fluid ounce is the right unit
Use price per fluid ounce for drinks and liquids sold in US sizes: juice, milk, soda, water, oil, sauces, shampoo and liquid soap. For big containers like milk jugs, per gallon gives friendlier numbers — tap “per gal” above the bars. Never use it for solid food, which is labeled in ounces of weight.
| Size | US fl oz | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cup | 8 fl oz | 237 mL |
| 1 pint | 16 fl oz | 473 mL |
| 1 quart | 32 fl oz | 946 mL |
| Half gallon | 64 fl oz | 1.89 L |
| 1 gallon | 128 fl oz | 3.79 L |
| 1 liter | 33.8 fl oz | 1,000 mL |
| 2 liters | 67.6 fl oz | 2,000 mL |
Ounces and fluid ounces are not the same
An ounce (oz) is a unit of weight. A fluid ounce (fl oz) is a unit of volume. Liquids are labeled in fluid ounces; solid food in ounces. For water they are close — a fluid ounce of water weighs about one ounce — but for oil, honey or syrup they differ, so never compare an oz price with a fl oz price. The calculator warns you if you try.
When per fluid ounce is not enough
Concentrated juice, dish soap and laundry detergent are diluted before use, so two bottles with the same price per fluid ounce can last very different lengths of time. For detergent, compare the cost per load. For powdered formula, which is sold by weight, use the baby formula calculator.
Multipacks of bottles
Water and sports drinks often come as 24 × 16.9 fl oz. Tap + Multipack, enter 16.9 as the size and 24 as the count, and the calculator uses 405.6 fl oz in total. Compare that with a gallon jug or a 6-pack directly.
If one product is labeled in liters or milliliters — common on imported bottles — pick that unit for it. You never need to convert anything yourself.
Frequently asked questions

Divide the price by the number of fluid ounces. A 64 fl oz bottle for $3.20 costs $0.05 per fl oz.
How many fluid ounces are in a gallon?
