Worked example: two container sizes
A 12.4 oz container of powder costs $18.99 and a 30.6 oz container costs $42.99. Per ounce: $18.99 ÷ 12.4 ≈ $1.53 and $42.99 ÷ 30.6 ≈ $1.40.
The larger container is about 8% cheaper per ounce.
Compare powder by weight
Powdered formula is sold by net weight, usually in ounces and sometimes in grams. Use the net weight on the label, not the size of the container. If one container is labeled in grams, choose g for it.
Powder vs. ready-to-feed
Ready-to-feed and liquid concentrate are measured in fluid ounces of liquid, while powder is measured by weight before mixing, so their per-ounce prices aren’t directly comparable. To compare across forms, use the number of prepared fluid ounces each label says it makes, and enter that as fl oz.
Same formula, different sizes
Only compare the formula your child uses — switching formulas is a decision for you and your pediatrician, not a calculator. Within one product, larger containers and multipacks are often, but not always, cheaper per ounce.
Check dates on bulk buys
Formula has a use-by date and must be used within the time printed on the label once opened. Buy in bulk only what you can use in time. The same thinking applies to diapers as your baby grows.
Multipacks and club sizes
Formula is also sold as twin packs or multi-container boxes. Tap + Multipack and enter the number of containers and the net weight of one; the calculator works out the total and the price per ounce.
Grams and ounces on the same label
Many labels show both, for example 12.4 oz (352 g). Use either — just choose the matching unit. The result can be shown per oz, per lb, per 100 g or per kg. Coupons and store rewards change the real price, so subtract them before you enter it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate formula price per ounce?
Divide the price by the net weight in ounces. A 20 oz container for $30.00 is $1.50 per ounce.
Can I compare powder in grams with powder in ounces?
Yes. Pick g for one container and oz for the other; the calculator converts them.
Is the biggest container always the cheapest per ounce?
Not always. Sales and coupons on smaller sizes can beat it, so compare each time.
