Worked example: jumbo pack vs. big box

A jumbo pack of 32 diapers costs $10.99 and a box of 128 costs $39.99. Per diaper: $10.99 ÷ 32 ≈ $0.34 and $39.99 ÷ 128 ≈ $0.31.

The box is about 9% cheaper per diaper. At, say, eight changes a day, a difference of about 3 cents per diaper is roughly 25 cents a day.

Why compare per diaper

Diaper packs come in so many counts — 24, 32, 74, 128, 168 — that comparing shelf prices is guesswork. Different sizes of the same brand often have different counts at a similar price, so the cost per diaper changes as your baby moves up a size.

Compare the same size and type

Only compare packs of the same diaper size (newborn, 1, 2, 3 …) and type. Overnight diapers and training pants are different products and usually cost more per diaper; mixing them makes the comparison meaningless.

Bigger box, but will you use it?

Babies grow fast. A large box is only a deal if you use it before your baby outgrows that size. If you are near the top of a size’s weight range, a smaller pack at a slightly higher cost per diaper may waste less money. Some stores exchange unopened packs — check your store’s own policy before relying on it.

Coupons and subscriptions

Subtract a coupon from the price before you enter it, so the calculator compares what you will really pay. For subscribe-and-save offers, enter the discounted price. The same approach works for wipes with the cost per item calculator.

Moving up a size

As babies grow, boxes hold fewer diapers for a similar price, so the cost per diaper rises. For example, a box of 156 size 3 diapers and a box of 120 size 4 diapers might both cost $49.99: that is $0.32 per diaper vs. $0.42 — about 30% more per diaper for the bigger size. Budget for the step up, and compare packs within the size you need.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate cost per diaper?

Divide the pack price by the number of diapers. 84 diapers for $25.20 is $0.30 per diaper.

Is the biggest box always the cheapest per diaper?

Not always. Sales on mid-size packs can beat the big box. Compare the cost per diaper each time.

Can I compare packs of different diaper sizes?

You can enter them, but the result isn’t meaningful: larger sizes usually cost more per diaper. Compare the size you need.
