Toilet Paper Cost Calculator

Enter sheets per roll as the size, the number of rolls in the × field, and the price to compare the real cost per sheet.

Pack A

Start typing a product like eggs or milk, then pick it to see the official US average.

Pack B

Any currency works — just use the same one for both products.

Enter two products to compare

Worked example: 12 “double” rolls vs. 6 “mega” rolls

Pack A: 12 rolls with 220 sheets each for $8.99. Pack B: 6 rolls with 425 sheets each for $7.49. Enter 220 sheets × 12 and 425 sheets × 6.

Pack A has 2,640 sheets: $8.99 ÷ 2,640 ≈ $0.0034 per sheet. Pack B has 2,550 sheets: $7.49 ÷ 2,550 ≈ $0.0029 per sheet. Pack B is about 14% cheaper per sheet — even though it has half as many rolls.

Why per roll is misleading

Rolls are not a fixed size. Packs say “double”, “mega”, “triple” or “equals 24 regular rolls”, and each brand defines those words for itself. The number of sheets per roll, printed on the pack, is the number you can compare across brands.

How to enter a pack

For each pack, enter the price, the sheets per roll as the size, and the number of rolls in the × field. The calculator multiplies them to get the total number of sheets and shows the cost per sheet. Per-sheet prices are tiny, so they are shown with extra decimals.

Sheet size and ply

Sheets are not all the same size, and 1-ply vs. 2-ply matters. If one brand’s sheets are noticeably smaller, or you would use more of a thinner one, keep that in mind. Some packs print the total area; dividing the price by that is even fairer. The same logic applies to paper towels.

Store brands vs. name brands

Store brands may have more or fewer sheets per roll, or a different ply, than the name brand next to them. Compare their sheet counts too: a pack that is cheaper per roll can still cost more per sheet.

Square feet: the fairest comparison

Sheets aren’t all the same size. Some packs also print the total area — for example in square feet — and the price per square foot takes sheet size into account:

Example packs
Pack APack B
Rolls126
Total area285.6 sq ft214.8 sq ft
Price$12.99$9.49
Price per sq ft≈ 4.55¢≈ 4.42¢

Pack B is about 3% cheaper per square foot. The calculator compares by sheet; to compare by area, divide each price by the square feet printed on the pack. If you use more sheets of a thinner paper, adjust for that as described in cost per use.

Frequently asked questions

Should I compare toilet paper per roll or per sheet?

Per sheet. Roll sizes vary by brand and by “mega” or “double” labels, while sheet counts are printed on every pack.

Where do I find the number of sheets?

On the side or back of the pack, usually as sheets per roll and sometimes as total sheets.

What does “12 mega rolls = 48 regular rolls” mean?

It compares the brand’s mega roll with its own regular roll. Use the sheet count instead — it works across brands.
