Worked example: two cereal boxes
Say a 12 oz box of cereal costs $3.49 and an 18 oz box costs $4.99. Divide each price by its weight: $3.49 ÷ 12 ≈ $0.291 per ounce, and $4.99 ÷ 18 ≈ $0.277 per ounce.
The bigger box is about 5% cheaper per ounce. That is roughly 1.4 cents less for every ounce — small on one box, but it adds up on things you buy every week.
Worked example 2: grams on one label
An imported chocolate bar is 200 g for $2.49; the US bar next to it is 7 oz for $2.29. 200 g is about 7.05 oz, so the imported bar costs $2.49 ÷ 7.05 ≈ $0.353 per ounce and the US bar $2.29 ÷ 7 ≈ $0.327 per ounce. The US bar is about 7% cheaper. In the calculator, pick g for one product and oz for the other — no conversion needed (1 oz ≈ 28.35 g).
When price per ounce is the right unit
Use price per ounce for small or light packages: snacks, cereal, spices, nuts, cheese, chocolate, coffee bags and single-serve cups. The numbers stay readable — a few cents to a couple of dollars — and many US shelf tags already show unit prices per ounce. For heavy items like meat and produce, price per pound is easier to read, and both always pick the same winner (see price per ounce vs. price per pound).
| Ounces | Grams | Pounds |
|---|---|---|
| 4 oz | 113 g | 0.25 lb |
| 8 oz | 227 g | 0.5 lb |
| 12 oz | 340 g | 0.75 lb |
| 16 oz | 454 g | 1 lb |
| 24 oz | 680 g | 1.5 lb |
| 32 oz | 907 g | 2 lb |
How to calculate price per ounce
Price per ounce = shelf price ÷ net weight in ounces. Use the net weight printed on the package (often marked "Net Wt"), not the size of the box. If the label gives pounds, multiply by 16 first: a 2 lb bag is 32 oz.
For multipacks, multiply before dividing: six 1.5 oz bags hold 9 oz in total. The calculator does this for you when you tap + Multipack.
Ounces vs. fluid ounces
Ounces (oz) measure weight; fluid ounces (fl oz) measure volume. Cereal, snacks, coffee and cheese are labeled in ounces. Drinks, oils and liquid soaps are labeled in fluid ounces. Compare like with like — for liquids, use the price per fluid ounce calculator.
When the shelf tag already shows a unit price
Many shelf tags print a unit price, but neighboring products don’t always use the same unit: one tag may say per ounce, the next per pound or per count. A sale sticker may not be reflected in the unit price at all. Entering the two products here puts both on the same scale in a few seconds.
Using it in the aisle
The calculator opens with ounces on both products and shows the result per ounce. Type the shelf price and net weight of the first item, then the second; the answer updates as you type, with no button to press. If you would rather see the price per pound, tap “per lb” above the bars — the winner and the percentage stay exactly the same.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the price per ounce?
Divide the price by the number of ounces. A 24 oz jar for $4.79 costs $4.79 ÷ 24 ≈ $0.20 per ounce.
Is a lower price per ounce always the better deal?
It is the lower price, but only a better deal if you use it all. A bigger package that goes stale before you finish it can cost more in the end.
How many ounces are in a pound?
There are 16 ounces in a pound. To turn a price per ounce into a price per pound, multiply by 16.
Can I compare an ounce price with a gram price?
Yes. Choose oz for one product and g for the other. The calculator converts both before comparing.
