Worked example: 12 oz bag vs. 1 kg bag

A 12 oz bag of whole beans costs $9.99 and a 1 kg bag costs $24.99. 12 oz is 0.75 lb, so the small bag is $9.99 ÷ 0.75 = $13.32 per pound. 1 kg is about 2.2046 lb, so the big bag is $24.99 ÷ 2.2046 ≈ $11.34 per pound.

The 1 kg bag is about 15% cheaper per pound.

Why coffee is hard to compare

Coffee bags rarely hold a round pound. You will find 10 oz, 12 oz, 2 lb and 40 oz bags next to imported 250 g, 500 g and 1 kg bags. The price per pound is the common denominator — tap “per kg” above the bars if you think in kilos.

Beans, ground and pods

Compare like with like: whole beans with whole beans, ground with ground. Pods and capsules are priced per pod, so compare them with the cost per item calculator, or by weight if the box lists the grams of coffee inside.

Freshness vs. price

Coffee loses flavor after the bag is opened. A big bag is only a bargain if you finish it while it still tastes good to you; otherwise a smaller bag at a higher price per pound may be the better buy. See is buying in bulk always cheaper? for more on that trade-off.

Coffee sold in grams

Many roasters sell 250 g, 340 g or 1 kg bags. Choose g or kg for those bags and the calculator converts. 340 g is about 12 oz and 250 g is about 8.8 oz, so a 250 g bag that costs the same as a 12 oz bag is the worse deal per pound.

Check the weight, not the bag

Bags of different shapes hold very different amounts, and a tall, narrow bag can hold less than a squat one that looks smaller. The net weight on the label is the only reliable figure.

Frequently asked questions

How many ounces of coffee are in a pound?

16. A 12 oz bag is three quarters of a pound, and a 10 oz bag is five eighths.

How do I compare a 1 kg bag with a 2 lb bag?

Enter 1 kg for one and 2 lb for the other. 1 kg is about 2.2 lb, so the kilo bag holds about 10% more coffee.

Should I compare coffee per pound or per ounce?

Either gives the same winner. Per pound is easier to read for coffee; tap “per oz” above the bars if you prefer.
