Coffee Cost per Cup: Whole Bean vs. Ground vs. Pods
Cost per cup = price ÷ the number of cups the package makes. For beans and ground coffee, cups = grams in the bag ÷ the grams you use per cup; for pods and capsules, it is simply the number of pods. Your own dose matters more than the brand.

How many cups are in a bag?
A common starting point is about 10 g of coffee per cup (roughly two level tablespoons of ground coffee); stronger brews use 12–15 g. Here is how many cups common bag sizes make at 10 g per cup:
| Bag | Grams | Cups |
|---|---|---|
| 10 oz | 283 g | 28 |
| 12 oz | 340 g | 34 |
| 1 lb | 454 g | 45 |
| 2 lb | 907 g | 90 |
| 1 kg | 1,000 g | 100 |
| 2.5 lb | 1,134 g | 113 |
At 15 g per cup, divide the cups by 1.5: a 12 oz bag makes about 23 cups instead of 34.
Worked example 1: beans vs. ground vs. pods
Three ways to buy your daily coffee, at 10 g per cup:
| Option | Price | Cups | Cost per cup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole beans, 2 lb bag | $17.99 | 90 | $0.20 |
| Ground, 12 oz bag | $8.99 | 34 | $0.26 |
| Pods, box of 24 | $13.99 | 24 | $0.58 |
Here the pods cost almost three times as much per cup as the beans. Over a year of one cup a day, that is about $213 for pods vs. $73 for beans (365 × $0.58 and 365 × $0.20). Enter the cups as the size in the calculator below to compare your own options.

Worked example 2: your dose changes the answer
You like your coffee strong and use 14 g per cup. The 12 oz bag of ground coffee now makes 340 ÷ 14 ≈ 24 cups, not 34.
- Ground at 14 g: $8.99 ÷ 24 ≈ $0.37 per cup.
- Pods: still $0.58 per cup — one pod is one cup.
- Ground is still about 36% cheaper per cup, but the gap has narrowed.
That is why it pays to know your own dose. Weigh it once with a kitchen scale, or count the scoops you use and weigh a scoop.
Comparing bags by price per pound first
If you use the same amount of coffee whichever bag you buy, the cheaper bag per pound is also cheaper per cup — so for beans vs. beans or ground vs. ground, the coffee price per pound calculator gives you the answer directly. Cost per cup matters when the forms differ: pods vs. bags, or a strong brew vs. a light one.
What the per-cup price leaves out
- Equipment: a $100 machine used for 730 cups over two years adds about 14 cents per cup. Pod machines and grinders both count.
- Filters, milk and sugar — the same for every option, so they don’t change the winner.
- Freshness: beans keep their flavor longer than ground coffee once opened. A bag that goes stale is wasted money; see cost per use.
- Convenience: pods are fast and need no measuring. That has value — just know what it costs per cup.
Checklist
- Find the grams in each bag (the label often prints them next to ounces).
- Find your dose in grams per cup.
- Cups = grams ÷ dose; for pods, cups = number of pods.
- Cost per cup = price ÷ cups.
- Big bags are cheaper per cup only if you finish them while fresh — compare with the warehouse club guide.
Worked example 3: espresso at home
A double espresso uses about 18 g of coffee. A 1 kg bag of espresso beans at $24.99 gives about 55 doubles (1,000 ÷ 18), or roughly $0.45 each. Espresso capsules at $5.99 for 10 cost $0.60 each.
- Beans: $24.99 ÷ 55 ≈ $0.45 per double.
- Capsules: $5.99 ÷ 10 ≈ $0.60 per capsule.
- Beans are about 24% cheaper per shot — before the cost of the machine and grinder, which you can spread over the shots you make, as shown above.
Cold brew and very strong drip use even more coffee per cup, so knowing your own grams per cup is what makes the comparison honest.
Common mistakes
- Comparing a 10 oz bag with a 12 oz bag by shelf price instead of per cup or per pound.
- Assuming one pod always makes one of your cups — some people brew two pods for a large mug.
- Forgetting that a stronger dose means fewer cups per bag.
Frequently asked questions
How many cups of coffee are in a pound?
About 45 cups at 10 g per cup, since a pound is about 454 g. At 15 g per cup, about 30.
Are coffee pods more expensive than ground coffee?
Usually per cup, because a pod holds a small amount of coffee in its own packaging. Divide each price by the number of cups to check.
How much ground coffee is one cup?
A common starting point is about 10 g — roughly two level tablespoons — for a standard cup. Many people use more for a stronger brew.
Is buying coffee in bulk cheaper per cup?
Usually, if you finish it while it is fresh. Whole beans keep their flavor longer than ground coffee once opened, so they suit bigger bags better.
