Worked example: chocolate bars

A 100 g bar costs 1.19 and a 300 g bar costs 2.99. The small bar is simply 1.19 per 100 g. The big bar is 2.99 ÷ 3 ≈ 1.00 per 100 g.

The big bar is about 16% cheaper per 100 g. On a phone screen the bars make that obvious before you have done any math.

Worked example 2: a 3.5 oz bar

A US chocolate bar is 3.5 oz for $1.99; an imported one is 100 g for $2.09. 3.5 oz is about 99.2 g, so the US bar costs about $2.01 per 100 g — around 4% cheaper than the imported bar, even though the two look the same size. Choose oz for the US bar and the calculator converts it (1 oz ≈ 28.35 g).

When price per 100 g is the right unit

Use price per 100 g for small or expensive items — spices, tea, chocolate, cheese, cold cuts, coffee and nuts — where a price per kilogram is a big, unfamiliar number. It is also the unit many European shelf labels use for these products. To switch between the two, move the decimal point one place.

How to calculate price per 100 g

Divide the price by the weight in grams, then multiply by 100. For 2.49 and 400 g: 2.49 ÷ 400 × 100 ≈ 0.62 per 100 g.

Why shelf labels use 100 g

For small, pricey items — spices, chocolate, cheese, coffee — the price per kilogram can look alarming and is hard to picture. Per 100 g keeps the numbers small and easy to compare. Many stores in Europe use per 100 g or per kg on their unit price labels.

If one label shows per kg and the next per 100 g, divide the per-kg price by 10 — or enter both products here and the calculator shows them in the same unit. Tap “per kg” above the bars if you prefer the price per kg.

Small packs, big differences

Snack-size and single-serve packs are convenient, but their price per 100 g is often far higher than the family pack. Enter both and the bar chart shows the gap at a glance. It also helps you spot shrinkflation when a familiar pack gets lighter.

Drinks and other liquids

For drinks, shelf labels usually show a price per liter or per 100 ml instead. Weight and volume can’t be compared with each other, so the calculator warns you if you mix grams with milliliters. Use the price per liter calculator for bottles and cartons.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert price per kg to price per 100 g?

Divide by 10. 12.90 per kg is 1.29 per 100 g.

Is price per 100 g the same as price per 100 ml?

Only for things measured by volume. Grams are weight and milliliters are volume, so for drinks use price per liter or per 100 ml.

Can I compare a 100 g pack with a 3.5 oz pack?

Yes. Choose g for one and oz for the other; 3.5 oz is about 99 g, and the calculator converts it exactly.
