Worked example: two bag sizes
A 15 lb bag of dry dog food costs $27.99 and a 30 lb bag costs $49.99. Per pound: $27.99 ÷ 15 ≈ $1.87 and $49.99 ÷ 30 ≈ $1.67.
The 30 lb bag is about 11% cheaper per pound.
Price per pound for dry food
Kibble is sold by weight. Use the net weight on the bag, in pounds or kilograms, and compare per pound or per kg with the buttons above the bars.
Compare cost per day, too
Foods differ in calories, so pets eat different amounts of each. The feeding guide on the bag says how much to feed per day. If one food needs a bigger daily portion, its lower price per pound can disappear. A fair check: price per pound first, then how many days each bag lasts at your pet’s portion.
Wet food and cans
Cans and pouches are labeled in ounces. Use the multipack field for cases: a 24-pack of 5.5 oz cans is 132 oz. Compare wet with wet and dry with dry — wet food is mostly water, so their per-pound prices aren’t comparable.
Storing big bags
A large bag saves money only if it stays fresh. Keep it closed and dry, and check the best-by date before buying more than your pet will eat in time. More on that in is buying in bulk always cheaper?
Kilogram bags
Imported and some premium foods list kilograms. Choose kg for those bags and the calculator converts: 12 kg is about 26.5 lb, so a 12 kg bag at $59.99 costs about $2.27 per pound. Tap “per kg” above the bars to see every bag per kilogram instead.
Treats
Treats come in small bags and often cost much more per pound than food. That is expected, but comparing treat brands with each other the same way can still save a lot over a year.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate dog food price per pound?
Divide the bag price by its weight. A 24 lb bag for $36.00 is $1.50 per pound.
How do I compare a kg bag with a lb bag?
Choose kg for one and lb for the other. 1 kg is about 2.2 lb; the calculator converts automatically.
Is a bigger bag always cheaper?
Usually per pound, but not always. Compare each time, and only buy what your pet will finish while it is fresh.
