Enter two products to compare
Worked example: chicken thighs
A regular pack of chicken thighs weighs 1.62 lb and costs $5.65. A family pack weighs 4.87 lb and costs $14.56. Per pound that is about $3.49 and $2.99.
The family pack is about 14% cheaper per pound. If you won’t eat 4.87 lb before it spoils, portion it and freeze some the day you buy it.
Reading meat labels
Packaged meat is usually priced by weight, and the label shows the price per pound and the total. Enter the total price and the net weight from the same label. Check that you are comparing the same thing: a sale sign may show a price per pack while the label shows a price per pound.
Family packs and bulk packs
Larger packs are often cheaper per pound, but not always — a sale on the regular pack can flip the result. The calculator gives you the answer for today’s prices in seconds, and the savings line shows what the difference is worth on the smaller pack.
Bone-in, skin-on and trimmed
Compare cuts that are the same: bone-in with bone-in, boneless with boneless. Bone-in cuts are usually cheaper per pound, but part of that weight is bone you won’t eat. The calculator compares the label weights; how much is edible depends on the cut.
Pounds or kilograms
If a label shows kilograms, pick kg for that pack. The calculator converts it, and you can see the result per lb or per kg with the buttons above the bars — the same as the general price per pound calculator.
Reduced-price stickers
Packs near their sell-by date are often marked down with a new total on a sticker. Work out the new price per pound from that total: a 2.4 lb pack at $9.56 ($3.98/lb) marked down by $2.00 costs $7.56, or $3.15 per pound — about 21% less. Cook or freeze it the same day.
